How Our Wheels Are Made

Forged From a Single Block.

In the 1960s, most wheels left the factory as stamped steel — pressed in pieces, welded together, dressed up with a hubcap. It was the best the era could build. Every VFW wheel starts differently: one solid block of forged aluminum, shaped under pressure and machined to tolerances that didn't exist back then. Same soul. Stronger metal.

  1. A solid forged aluminium billet before machining

    One Solid Block

Every wheel starts as one solid billet of 6061-T6 aluminum. No welds. No seams. The entire wheel is cut from that block.

  2. A forging press shaping an aluminium billet

    Forged Under Pressure

A forging press shapes the billet under thousands of tons of pressure. This aligns the metal's grain and closes the voids left by casting. Heat treatment locks in the strength.

  3. A CNC machine cutting a wheel from forged aluminium

    Machined to Fit Your Car

CNC machines cut the final shape. We confirm the fitment with you before setting the bolt pattern and backspacing.

  4. A finished forged wheel being inspected

    Finished and Inspected

Before shipping, we balance and inspect every wheel. Then it's crated and insured for the trip to your garage.

Heritage 5 - Vintage Forged Wheels

The design

One Shape. Every Car.

The five-spoke earned its place by looking right on almost anything. Here is what we kept, and what we changed underneath it.

  1. The flare is the whole design.

Five round spokes that widen where they meet the rim. Get that transition wrong and the wheel reads as a copy of a copy. Ours is machined, so the radius is the same on every spoke of every wheel.

  2. Forged, not cast.

The originals were poured — magnesium first, then aluminum. A casting can carry porosity you never see. This is one piece of 6061-T6 squeezed under pressure, so there is nothing hidden inside it to find later.

  3. A finish that stays.

Magnesium pitted, cracked and corroded, which is why so few survive with their original face. Aluminum does not behave that way, and the polish is cut into forged metal rather than laid over a casting.

Talk through the details

Heritage

Borrowed From History. Built for Now.

The original

The five-spoke started as a drag wheel. American Racing advertised the flared five-spoke in Hot Rod in December 1959 — cast magnesium, sold to racers who wanted weight off the car, at eighty-eight dollars a corner. The Torq-Thrust name and the formal launch came in 1963, and the wheel turned up under Don Garlits' dragster. By May 1965 there was an aluminum version for the street. Magnesium was light, but it pitted, cracked and corroded, and a casting could carry porosity nobody could see.

What we changed

Ours keeps the silhouette — five round spokes flaring where they meet the rim — and changes what is underneath it. One piece of forged 6061-T6 instead of poured metal, so there is no porosity and nothing hidden inside. Aluminum does not pit the way magnesium did, so the polish stays. And it is drawn around tires you can still buy, which is why this is the one design in the range we build for every platform rather than a single model year.
